The New Zealand Fire Service Uses 4 Levels Of Protective Clothing

Level 2 Firefighting uniform Level 2 uniform
New Zealand Fire Service Level 1 uniform consists of light weight cotton material impregnated with a fire retardant.

The shirt, trousers and overalls are used for everyday station duties as well as non-fire emergencies.

The leather boots are ankle high, with steel caps and a rubber fuel/oil/heat resistant sole.

New Zealand Fire Service Level 2 uniform is used for all structure fires. Made by Balleyclare Special Products UK, the garment has a three layer construction.

The outer layer is a Kevlar blend fabric developed for the NASA programme and will not burn in air.

The middle layer is the moisture barrier and is made of Gore Tex. This layer is porous and allows water vapour to pass through but will not let water in.

The inner layer is the thermal barrier and is made from Fire Retardant quilted felt.

Our helmets are fibreglass with plastic one piece visors which also incorporate a fire retardant neck skirt.

The boots are rubber, steel capped with fuel resistant soles. We use standard leather gloves.

New Zealand Fire Service Level 3 uniform is a chemical splash suit. It is used with B.A. (breathing apparatus) and is suitable for minor chemical incidences and other hazardous emergencies.
New Zealand Fire Service Level 4 uniform is a fully enclosed gas suit which is used for all major hazardous emergencies.
